Sporting Kansas City Juniors-Futsal Action

The Sporting Kansas City Juniors have taken their seasons indoors during the winter months in Kansas City and can now be seen playing in Futsal KC, one of more than 40 US Youth Futsal leagues throughout the country. (July 27, 2011) US Youth Futsal was unveiled on Sunday as the new name and look of the Super F League, continuing the organizations commitment to growing the game of futsal across the United States.

The initiative has always been to develop youth futsal throughout the United States so it is only appropriate to adopt a name that best reflects that mission and our expanding role in the process, said John Sciore, Director of Development..

US Youth Futsal, the only national futsal organization affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation, is dedicated to developing organized futsal opportunities for amateur players in cities across the country. US Youth Futsal is the fastest growing futsal organization in the U.S. and currently has more than 1,500 teams competing in its 35 leagues located in over 25 states, including top cities like Boston, Cleveland, Kansas City, South Jersey and St. Louis.

Players and coaches with US Youth Futsal are registered through the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA), the largest multi-sport sanctioning body in the United States.

We started back in 1997 as the Kansas City Futsal League with five teams and here we are 14 years later having grown into the leading futsal supporter in the U.S. with a presence in 35 cities and counting, Jon Parry, Executive Director, said. AFC: The AFC Futsal Championship 2012, which serves as the region’s qualifying competition, will be played from 25 May to 1 June 2012. More.

CONCACAF: Eight teams will participate in the CONCACAF Futsal Championship between 2-8 July at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Seven teams have already qualified: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, USA and St. Kitts & Nevis.

The last berth for the CONCACAF finals will be decided by a two-legged play-off between Canada and El Salvador on 28 and 29 June.

Lucas Stauffer, 16 makes US National Futsal Team

Luke Stauffer, originally from Owensboro and currently attending Shattuck St Mary’s in Minnesota, recently attended the US Futsal Elite Player Identification Camp from September 12-15 at South Coast Soccer City in Torrance, California. The ID camp from September 12-15 was designed to identify the top Futsal players in the country, with an eye toward strengthening the U.S. team that will attempt to qualify for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Thailand.

After four intense days of training against 55 other players, Luke was invited back to California September 24 to October 1 with the goal of being selected as part a roster that will represent the United States at the 2011 Grand Prix of Futsal, an elite annual international tournament taking place in Brazil from October 14 to 24. At 16 years old, Luke was the youngest player at the original ID camp with most of the players over 18. There were even two players who are currently playing professionally in Japan and Italy.

Luke got his start playing futsal under his father’s leadership, Ty Stauffer, at SportsTutor in Owensboro before moving to United 1996 FC, Louisville, KY. Luke was a celebrated State and Regional ODP player and was named as part of the U14 US Soccer Federation National ID Program. He has been a participant in various USYF event. He played in the Regional Tournament in St. Louis and the National Championship in Kansas City

United States Youth Futsal and United States Adult Futsal is proud to announce the US Futsal Nationals.
When: February 17-20, 2012.
Where: Overland Park Convention Center in Overland Park KS. 6 courts in one facility. Adding a more festive Futsal Nationals atmosphere under one roof.

The only national futsal tournament sanctioned by US Soccer.

The tournament will draw from 40 US Youth Futsal leagues from across the country in over 26 states. 1500 registered US Youth Futsal Teams.

Jon Parry was a member of the 1996 United States Futsal Team that played in the World Championship in Spain and the 1998 team that played in the Brazilian Olympics.

Jon played professional indoor soccer for eight years and scored over 400 goals in his professional career. He was an All-Star four times. In 1992-93 he led the Kansas City Attack to their first National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) championship.

Jon also played for five years in the Continental Indoor Soccer League (CISL) with the Sacramento Knights where he is the leading scorer in Knights franchise history with 127 goals and 84 assists.

Peter Vermes grew up in New Jersey, attended Delran High School and Rutgers University where he earned All – American honors at both levels. From 1988 to 1998, he was recognized as a National Team Player and Team Captain.

During this time he was also member of: The 1988 US Olympic Team (awarded “1988 US Olympic Player of the Year” and “1988 US Soccer Male Athlete of the Year”); The 1989 FUTSAL World Cup Team (winning the Bronze Medal); The 1990 US World Cup Team (Italy) and the 1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup (Gold Medal).

Upon completion of his college career, Peter began his professional career in the American Professional Soccer League (APSL) and then went on to play in Hungary, Holland and Spain. He returned to the United States to play Major League Soccer (MLS) for the NY/NJ MetroStars, Colorado Rapids and Kansas City Wizards. In 2000 the Kansas City Wizards won the MLS Cup and he was named “MLS Defender of the Year”. He retired from his professional career in 2003. In 2005 he served as an Assistant Coach for the U20 Men’s National Team which competed at the FIFA U20 Youth World Championships in Holland.

Currently, Peter is a member of the USSF Executive Committee, USSF Board of Directors, and Chairman of the Athlete Council and a board member of the US Soccer Foundation. He holds a USSF “A” License and is the Executive/Technical Director of the Blue Valley Soccer Club. Peter is also the Technical Director (2006) and Head Coach (2009) for Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City.

John Sciore was a member of the Florissant Valley Community College National Championship team in 1974. As captain of the 1976 Rockhurst University soccer team, he led the Hawks to the NAIA National Finals.

In 2008, John was named the Super F League’s Director of Development and Tournament Director of the Super F Champions Cup, the Super F National Futsal Championship. John’s role as National Director of Development is to carry out the mission of Super F League, to develop and expand the game of Futsal in the United States. John’s experience as a soccer player, businessman, entrepreneur and futsal league owner brings extensive knowledge of building and maintaining a futsal league.

Originally, in 2003, John became active in futsal by opening the Gateway Futsal League in St. Louis, MO. In 2005, he affiliated his league with Super F. In the 2006 and 2007 season, Gateway Super F has had over 200 teams in its winter youth league, making it one of the largest youth leagues in the country.

Grow Your Brain with Futsal: An Interview with Daniel Coyle

BERKELEY, Calif. (5-20-10) – The number one question for any coach is how to cultivate the best players possible without killing the love of the game. How do you design a practice that develops talent, simulates real game situations, and gets everyone involved? To find out I asked Daniel Coyle, author of The Talent Code, who argues that it is actually possible to “grow” talent. For those soccer coaches whose players were probably not kicking in the womb, this is excellent news.

For Coyle, Futsal is the “perfectly designed game” to develop soccer talent. Many of us Futsal aficionados could have told you that already, but in The Talent Code, Coyle presents both scientific and empirical research to confirm our enthusiasm for soccer’s smaller sister. In this book he explores the idea of “deep practice” and the effect that constant repetition has on the neurological development of an athlete or artist. Without getting too deep into the science side of the story, it turns out that through constant repetition one can actually grow a kind of insulation called myelin around connections in the brain to make them fire faster.

When I suggested to Coyle that repetition in practice also develops muscle memory, he claimed that physically there’s no such thing. “Muscles are actually really dumb,” he pointed out. “Muscles are like the wooden part of the puppet. The action is with the strings.” These “strings” are the connections in the brain, and the faster information travels through them, the better you perform. More of the right kind of practice means more myelin to transmit neurological signals even faster.

For a soccer coach, this is where Futsal comes in. According to Coyle, there are many qualities of Futsal that make it the perfect tool for deep practice—and developing that all-important myelin. Because it is played on a smaller scale, with fewer players and a ball that has 30% less bounce, it naturally provides players with “perfect feedback and lots of quality reps.” Although the fundamentals are the same, the significant differences between Futsal and outdoor soccer make it the ideal setting for maximum learning with minimal coaching.

To illustrate this point, Coyle cited the example of board sports—skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding—because there is no coach to explain how to get it right. People learn these sports by repetition, by figuring out what works and what doesn’t, so that “the sport teaches you what to do.” This makes the learning process much more meaningful, because every mistake becomes a teaching moment and every success builds “a pokerhand of possibilities” to use in the future. Add to this the intensity and competition of Futsal, and you have the perfect training tool for building a better soccer player.

For example, consider the depth of soccer talent and range of ball-handling creativity that comes out of Brazil. It’s no coincidence that almost all Brazilian youth play Futsal for years before they ever touch an outdoor ball. For one, there is less space required for a Futsal court than for a soccer field, and organizing a game is “cheaper, faster and easier.” According to Coyle, it’s “the perfect confluence of circumstance and culture” in Brazil that makes Futsal the norm for young players, resulting in some of the best professionals in the world. In the first chapter of his book Coyle says, “since the 1950s Brazilian players have trained in a particular way, with a particular tool that improves ball-handling skill faster than anywhere else in the world.” That tool is, of course, Futsal.

Although this sport is rapidly gaining popularity in its own right on an international scale, like all things soccer, it is slower to catch on in the United States where coaches are used to sculpting players with drills and conditioning. However, Coyle argues that “the sport sells itself.” After investigating the Brazilian scene, he brought a few Futsal balls back the United States and “just threw them into the high school pick up games. The kids loved it.” Because it’s basically condensed play, which is the best kind of deep practice, anyone who enjoys soccer will be a lot more enthusiastic about playing Futsal than running suicides down eternal lines of cones. Not to mention, Futsal will grow your brain. Talk about the perfect sport!

Tozer Named FIFA Futsal Instructor

U.S. Futsal National Team head coach Keith Tozer has been selected by FIFA as a Futsal Instructor. He will be able to teach courses organized by FIFA throughout the world.

Tozer has been head coach of the U.S. Futsal Team since 1996, leading the side to three FIFA Futsal World Cups and two CONCACAF Futsal Championship gold medals. The team was seventh at the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Chinese Taipei. His overall record as head coach stands at 27-24-11. As a player, Tozer scored three goals in five matches for the U.S. Futsal Team in 1986.

"I am extremely honored to have been selected as a FIFA Futsal Instructor," Tozer said. "I look forward to traveling the world and helping in the teaching of futsal, which has grown dramatically in the last 10 years."

Tozer is a veteran of the indoor soccer leagues in the U.S., playing a 12-year career in the MISL after being selected first in the MISL inaugural draft. The head coach of the Milwaukee Wave in the Xtreme Soccer League has more victories than any other coach in North American indoor soccer.

FIFA, the international governing body for soccer, offers an extensive program of courses to educate and train instructors, coaches, referees, doctors, managers and journalists. These courses focus not just on the technical aspects of the game, but also on its social values.

Futsal is a sport that is a derivative of soccer played with five-man teams on a basketball style court, with no walls and a low bouncing ball, unlike the traditional sport of U.S. indoor soccer played with a six-man squads and walls. Great soccer super stars such as Pele, Zico and Ronaldo grew up playing the game and credit futsal with developing their skills.
