Youth Futsal Monthly

Edition 16 Nov 2016

By John Haasis, YFM Editor

The NAPFL is a competitive regional men’s futsal league offering high level of competition in the Great Lakes Region.  NAPFL is currently drawing teams from Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. NAPFL which is short for North American Premier Futsal League is sanctioned by U.S. Adult Futsal, a US Soccer Affiliate.

NAPFL is led by an excellent pool of staff members:

  • Fabian Rodriguez as NAPFL Commissioner
  • Zeke Rodriguez as the League Director
  • Brett Willner as their referee assignor.  Brett and his staff are all futsal certified referees and have experience in the U.S. Youth Futsal Regional and National Championships, PFL referee combines, and pro indoor soccer.

NAPFL’s story began last year when the Grand Rapids ABQ Men’s Team founded and formed NAPFL.  They felt there was a disparate need for competitive men’s futsal league that would provide high level of competition.  They decided to create a regional futsal league which provides that during the Winter months.  NAPFL season runs from early November through the end of March.

The first season the NAPFL only had 3 weekends of competitions. During each of the 3 weekends, each team played 2-3 games at a host city.  Conclusion of the NAPFL season, the top 4 teams were invited to the U.S. Adult Futsal National Championships.  After a series of group and knockout games, Grand Rapids ABK Futsal was crowned National Champions.

After a successful fist season, it was decided this year NAPFL would have a more traditional format. Each team will play home and away matches, totalling 8 games.  NAPFL wanted to allow more traveling which will allow each team an opportunity to host home games in their city.

This year the NAPFL had interest from over 10 teams from the Great Lakes Region. It was decided to go with a small 5 team division.  The 5 groups (teams) selected are very committed, serious, and dedicated in growing the beautiful game of futsal. Additionally, the 5 groups operate either a youth futsal club, U.S. Youth Futsal sanctioned league, or organize futsal tournaments.

The following 5 teams make up the NAPFL’s 2016 / 17 Great Lakes Region are:

  • Lansing City Futsal (MI)
  • Columbus Futsal (Ohio)
  • Fort Wayne Phoenix (Indiana)
  • Grand Rapids ABK (MI)
  • Cleveland Xtreme (Ohio).

4 of the 5 teams are returning teams from last season.  The expansion team is Columbus Futsal who have this past year done very well competing, winning Regional and National tournaments.

NAPF have been in communications with other regions across the United States including California, Florida, New York, and Kansas. The goal is to form different regions across the country.   The highest seeded teams from each region will qualify for the national championships.

NAPFL have also been in discussion with the formation of a women's league since all 5 groups are looking to make a women's Futsal teams during this winter season.

“We understand that working with Men's teams can be a challenge, but we believe that we have put together a division of 5 groups that are dedicated to the sport of futsal and will be around for a long time”. said Fabian Rodriguez. he continued “The 5 clubs are also working closely together and have built partnerships on the youth side as well. All 5 groups are in our league for all the right reasons and share the goal of growing the sport of futsal”.
